In 2017, the D Jones Family Charitable Foundation continued its support of the children of Uganda through its ongoing commitment to the Hearts & Hope for Uganda organization. In 2015, the foundation provided construction materials and furnishings for a new school and, in 2016, its funds helped to purchase land in order to install a clean water well in the village of Namwendwa. This year’s grant will support the following initiatives for six sponsored primary schools which serve over 1,000 children.

First Aid Kits. Each of the six primary schools will receive first aid kits stocked with items they need to treat students. The schools currently do not have funds to offer even basic supplies like aspirin, band-aids and antibiotics. Not only will the kits include these basic items, but funds will be made available to supply some malaria medications as well.

Hand-washing Stations. Each of the primary schools need hand washing stations located near the school latrines. In addition to building simple washing stations, the students will be taught about the benefits of hand washing before eating and after using the latrine. Understanding of basic hygiene is lacking in Uganda and is responsible for many preventable, hygiene-related illnesses.

Textbooks. All of the sponsored primary schools need additional textbooks to appropriately stock all classrooms. The goal will be to use some of the grant funding to purchase as many books as possible for one or two of the schools.

Youth Conference. In 2018, all sponsored and scholarship children who are in secondary, vocational or university will be invited to come together for an inaugural, two-day youth conference. During the conference they will have a chance to hear from professional speakers who will cover topics designed to improve their health, well being and job prospects. The students will also have a chance to connect with their peers to learn from one another and to develop a support network as they continue with their studies. This program will serve roughly 100 children and act as a pilot program to determine if it is viable to continue annually in the future
